Pre-Conference III:  Attracting Tide Players: Effective Ways to Approach International Recruiting in China

9AM to 1PM (includes lunch)      Cost:  $75                                 Max registration:  100 participants

Workshop Description:
The number of Chinese students enrolled in U.S. undergraduate programs grew substantially (again) last year. According to the most recent Open Doors Report, published by the Institute of International Education (IIE), the number undergraduates from China enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions skyrocketed from 57,000 students to 74,000, a 31% increase. As Karin Fischer and Tom Bartlett noted within “China Conundrum”, a widely distributed article published jointly last year by The Chronicle of Higher Education and The New York Times, "it’s the sudden and startling uptick in applicants from China that has caused a stir at (American) universities..." How does this unique, motivated, and ambitious cohort of students make decisions about where to pursue higher education? What is the most effective way to attract and evaluate applicants from China? How can universities ensure support and success once students arrive on campus? A panel of experienced recruiting veterans and China experts will lead attendees through interactive exercises and discussions that will meet clear learning objectives. Participants will analyze recent survey results, student mobility trends and student search metrics for China, differentiated by province, in order to develop creative, applicable strategies that will forward their specific institutional goals. The half-day workshop will also display how trends associated with China offer keys to approaching opportunities elsewhere.
